| The Tale of Chinese Medicine published by Zhonghua Book Company in 2018 is written by SONG Yan,vice president of China Association for the promotion of population and culture.It has a detailed introduction for Chinese medicine species and medicine culture in different areas.A series of descriptions are given to explore the origin of medicinal materials,display the processing technology of decoction pieces,and analyze the principles of medicine,which are of great benefit to the spread of traditional Chinese medicine culture.In this translation practice,Chapter Three and Chapter Four in this book are selected as the object of intensive translation.After the analysis of textual features of Chinese herbal medicine names,processing technology of traditional Chinese medicine and its functions,relevant terms and concepts are classified and corresponding translating methods are summarized respectively in this report.In the translation process,based on producing areas,external appearance of herbs and medicinal parts,Chinese herbal names are translated by transliteration and annotation,simplification,using abbreviations and acronyms,and other methods.For the processing technology and efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine,the methods of transplanting existing expressions,using parallel structures,etc.are adopted.Then,this report has examined the above translation methods through case analysis.The author hopes that this translation practice may help others to do the translation of traditional Chinese medicine texts.The English-to-Chinese translation of traditional Chinese medical classics and other publications of similar kind provides a window into foreigners’ better understanding of Chinese medicine culture,thus promoting the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine and even the popularization of Chinese culture. |
