Instruction of lexical chunks,as a vocabulary teaching method,has gradually been used in English teaching.Instruction of lexical chunks emphasizes that words are no longer isolated individuals.That is,learners should not only focus on the memory of a single word,but make a single word into a phrase or a chunk through logical connection.They need to pay attention to the overall structure,and combine vocabulary and grammar.Therefore,it is of great significance for teachers to study instruction of lexical chunks and apply it better in practical teaching.After searching and analyzing the related literatures,based on Chomsky’s universal grammar,schema theory and chunk theory of memory,the author studies from the following two questions: 1)What is English teachers’ cognition to instruction of lexical chunks? 2)How do teachers use instruction of lexical chunks in practical teaching? Are there any problems in teaching? If yes,what are they?In this thesis,three English teachers and their corresponding students in Xi’an Primary School are taken as the research participants.Through classroom observation,interview and questionnaire,the author collected and analyzed the data by SPSS24.0.The main findings are as follows: most teachers hold an affirmative attitude towards instruction of lexical chunks.However,some teachers just confuse the two meanings between vocabulary teaching and instruction of lexical chunks.Some teachers have used instruction of lexical chunks in practical teaching but there are still some problems in instruction of lexical chunks as follows: in terms of teaching content,it lacks diversity.There are not affluent teaching materials but textbooks;in terms of teaching method,it is based more on teacher’s explanation and less on involvingcontext and situation,and the error correction is mainly based on direct correction by teachers;in terms of teaching objectives,some teachers pay more attention to knowledge objectives and ability objectives,emotion objectives are ignored.In view of the above problems,the author puts forward the corresponding strategies as follows:in terms of cognition,teachers need to systematically and thoroughly understand instruction of lexical chunks,so that theory can be applied to teaching practice;in terms of teaching content,teaching material should be as diverse as possible.Teachers should multiply rich and authentic language materials by combining explanations with student exercises,introducing context and situations into teaching and diversifying error correction methods;in terms of teaching objectives,teachers should pay attention to emotion objectives and integrate teaching objectives effectively.The thesis analyzes the English teachers’ cognition to instruction of lexical chunks,the specific application of instruction of lexical chunks and the problems in teaching,and gives corresponding suggestions in order to provide inspiration and suggestions for the advantages of primary English teachers.It is hoped that primary school English teachers can make a better use of lexical chunks in their teaching to achieve sound learning effect. |
