| In China,secondary vocational school students’ English foundation is obviously weaker than that of students in the senior middle school.Their mastery of vocabulary is far from satisfaction.What’s more,teachers do not attach importance to the vocabulary teaching in the English class.Most teachers pay attention to the explanation of single word according to the word list in class,in which they not only neglect relationships among different words,but also the relationships between words and phrases.As a result,students’ vocabulary ability is limited.And teachers fail to create some active vocabulary development activities in class to arouse students’ learning interest.Therefore,it is necessary to explore a better way in vocabulary teaching.Based on the theories of semantic fields and lexical chunks(especially,Lewis’ classification of chunks),the author attempts to apply a new teaching way-lexical chunks based on semantic fields.The whole study will address three basic research questions:1.What effect will the application of lexical chunks based on semantic fields have on learners’ enlargement of vocabulary?2.What impact will the application of lexical chunks based on semantic fields have on learners’ English learning interest?3.In comparison with the mechanical way in vocabulary teaching,what are the advantages of the application of lexical chunks based on semantic fields?In order to find out whether the method is practical or not,the author conducted an experiment for sixteen weeks from September 2017 to January 2018,with class 1661(as experimental class,or EC)and class 1634(as control class or CC)from a certain Electronic School in Dalian.In order to ensure the validity of experiment,before the experiment,a pre-test is administered so as to know whether the learners’ English vocabulary ability is more or less the same.During the experiment,the control class adopts mechanical teaching way,yet the experimental class adopts the application of lexical chunks based on semantic fields.After the experiment,the author gives the subjects the post-test and questionnaire so as to confirm if the learners’ vocabulary enlargement and their interest for learning English and specialized vocabulary have been promoted.And the data of pre-test and post-test have been analyzed by SPSS 19.0.The results show that vocabulary size of the students who are in the experimental class has been improved to some extent.Consequently,students take part in the class activities actively,and they have learned the way to build up their vocabulary more systematically than before. |
