A Study On Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In Lin Yutang’s Translation Of Fu Sheng Liu Ji From The Perspective Of Cultural Translation Theory

Translation is not simply the transformation between languages,as a medium of introduction and communication of different cultures,translation should promote the collision and integration of different cultures with the purpose of cultural exchange.Therefore,the translator should carefully take the cultural factors behind the language into consideration when carrying out translation activities.Susan Bassnett is a representative of cultural translation theory.In her book Translation History Culture,which was jointly compiled by Andre Lefevere,she formally put forward the concept of “cultural turn.” This theory is of great significance to the translator’s translation practice and intercultural communication.Culture-loaded words are words with their own cultural characteristics formed by different countries and nationalities according to different geographical environment,life style,religious beliefs and customs.These words,which directly or indirectly reflect the cultural life of different countries,can be either concrete things or abstract concepts.The study of culture-loaded words helps to convey the cultural connotations of the source language more accurately and ensure the accuracy of the translation.Fu Sheng Liu Ji,an autobiographical prose written by a scholar of Qing DynastyShen Fu,describes the author’s anecdotes and travel experiences.Therefore,the full text concludes many culture-loaded words related to society,religion and geography,which is a better research object.According to the academic consensus,in the three translations of Fu Sheng Liu Ji,Lin Yutang’s version is easy to understand,without losing the precise expression and cultural connotation of the original text.Therefore,this thesis conducts a study of specific corpus in Lin Yutang’s English version from the perspective of Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory to explore the translation strategies of culture-loaded words.Based on the perspective of cultural translation,this thesis mainly studies the following issues:(1)How to select translation strategies when dealing with cultureloaded words under the cultural translation theory?(2)Which aspects of culture-loaded words translation need to be further improved under the cultural translation theory? Research findings:(1)Lin Yutang adopts the translation strategy of foreignization supplemented by domestication.Domestication reflects Lin Yutang’s efforts to meet the needs of TL readers’ understanding and aesthetic expectations,as well as to the target culture.While foreignization shows Lin Yutang’s intention and efforts to respect the original work,the original author and the source culture.(2)In terms of specific translation skills,Lin Yutang mainly adopts free translation,literal translation,transliteration,transliteration plus note,substitution and other skills to pass on the culture connotations of source language to the TL readers.(3)More notes should be used to deliver the cultural connotations of the original text to the most extent.Based on Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory,this thesis discusses the translation strategies of culture-loaded words in Fu Sheng Liu Ji,which can further verify the applicability of cultural translation theory in translating literary works.At the same time,this thesis summarizes the translation strategies of culture-loaded words in Lin Yutang’s English translation,which provides a theoretical basis for the translation of culture-loaded words,and the research results have guiding significance for translation practice.
