| In today’s economic globalization and higher education internationalization,English has become a common language for international communication in various fields. The ability to use English fluently has also become an important quality of talents with international competitiveness. Thus,College English as a large-scale public compulsory course, its reform in the new era has attracted much attention. In 2018,China entered a new era of reform and opening up,the Ministry of education has therefore put forward the “Double First-class” strategy of accelerating the construction of world-class universities and disciplines. At present, colleges and universities in China are actively revising the talent cultivation program to match the“Double First-Class” construction.Under the general trend of reducing credits,College English curriculum must reestablish a reasonable curriculum outline in order to fulfill the historical mission.Guangxi University,as a key comprehensive research university in Guangxi,is also working out a talentcultivation program in 2020.The College English curriculum must meet the school’s orientation, and the personalized learning needs of students as well. Therefore,in 2019,this study conducted a questionnaire survey and interview on the English learning needs of undergraduates who are taking English course,to provide reference data and information for the new curriculum development.Based on the needs analysis model of Dudley Evans & St.John, this study adopts the methods of literature, interview and questionnaire to investigate the English learning needs of 2017 and 2018 non-English major undergraduates of Guangxi University.Data from the following five aspects was collected and analyzed: English proficiency, the needs for course objectives, the needs for course content, the needs for course implementation and the needs for course assessment.6550 valid questionnaires were collected online. This study mainly answers the following three questions: 1)What is the current demand for College English Teaching in Guangxi University? 2)What are the English learning needs of undergraduates of Guangxi University?3)Is there a gap between school’s English education needs and students’ learning needs? The research results show that: 1)The college English education needs of Guangxi University match the Guidelines on College English Teaching Draft and national needs for development as a whole.2)Students’ needs are utilitarian, practical and diversified. But their needs also have a whit ofblindness and are a little unreasonable.3)Students’ needs match school’s education needs as a whole, but there is still a gap between these two needs.According to the research data, this paper makes a conclusion on the manifestations of the gap between students’ needs and school’s needs: 1)There is a gap between the needs of students’ utilitarian learning goals and the needs of school training goals.2)At present, the number and diversity of the courses offered by Guangxi University are limited, which fails to meet students’ diversified English learning needs.3)The fact that students hope to increase class hours is contrary to the reform of reducing credits and class hours.4)Students’ limited perception of scientific learning assessment is a long-term effect of test-oriented education. As for these problems above, this paper attempts to put forward the following suggestions: 1)School and teachers should reduce the impact of utilitarian learning motivation on students.2)Students’ reasonable English learning needs should be taken into full consideration during the design of curriculum.3)It is very essential to develop students’ autonomous learning ability.4)School also should aim to create a well-managed learning assessment system. Finally,it is hoped that this paper can provide reference data and some suggestions for the design of college English curriculum of Guangxi University,in order to contribute to the development of college English education of Guangxi University and its “Double First-Class”construction. |
