A Study On Art Activities And Artistic Market Condition In Shenzhen In The Initial Stages For Reform And Opening-up From Lei Ziyuan’s Collections With A Certain Age Mentorship Letters

This thesis selected art exchange activities in Shenzhen at the early stage of China’s reform and opening up as the research object to investigate and study the reasons for active art exchange in Shenzhen and the rudimentary status of fine art market in China at the time.Shenzhen is a city adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao.Due to its special geographical location,which offers foreigners convenience to visit Shenzhen Exhibition Hall for art exhibitions and purchase art collections,creating conditions for Shenzhen to become a window for cultural exchange between China and abroad.Shenzhen Exhibition Hall has successfully held a variety of large-scale events and art exhibitions such as “Guangdong Art Exhibition”,“Beijing Rongbaozhai Wood Engraving Watermark Exhibition”,and “1st Shenzhen Art Festival”,and laying a solid foundation for Shenzhen Exhibition Hall in art exchange at home and abroad at that time.With the policy of “going out” and “bringing in”,Boya Gallery held a number of successive art exchange events in New York,Singapore,Canada and other regions,which strongly promoted the development of art market in Shenzhen at early stage.At that time,Shenzhen became appealing to China’s great artists who flocked into the city and brought an important opportunity for cultural prosperity.Shenzhen’s open and dynamic environment has played a positive role in artistic creation of these artists.By investigating Lei Ziyuan’s collection of letters from teachers and friends,this paper studied the reasons for the prosperous art and culture exchanges in Shenzhen in a specific historical period from the perspectives of art exchange events,special geographical location,development of art market,and relationship between artists and Shenzhen.While conducted systematical analysis of early art exchange events in Shenzhen,this paper explored the significant role of cultural exchange window and bridge played by Shenzhen’s public art institutions and associated art institutions by China and foreign capitals during the marketization process,through which it revealed the conditions for germination of development of art market,and further studied the opportunity of the rise of art market in Shenzhen,as well as the influence of different environments on the transformation of artistic styles of artists.
