With the development of ecological linguistics, the study of ecological classroom environment is becoming more and more abundant. However, there is no widely accepted view on the definition of the ecological classroom environment.Based on the existing research related with ecological classroom environment, this study defines college English ecological classroom environment.According to the definition and van Lier’s ecological linguistics theory, the ecological classroom environment model is proposed, which includes two components: affordance and emergence.Based on this model,an ecological classroom environment scale is constructed in this study, which is used to explore the College English ecological classroom environment. The exploration mainly addresses the following three questions: 1)What is the current condition of college students’ ecological classroom environment? 2)Are there any differences in the perception of ecological classroom environments by students of different genders? 3)Is the components of affordance in ecological classroom environment able to predict the results of emergence in ecological classroom environment? The research subjects are 347 undergraduates from a university located in central China. They were interviewed by a self-made questionnaire which is designed on the basis of van Lier’s linguistic ecological theory. This questionnaire consists of two parts:affordance and emergence.Affordance is composed of the following three parts:ecological subjects’ relationship, ecological subjects and pedagogical practice, ecological subjects and environment. After exploratory factor analysis and reliability tests,it has been found that the questionnaire has high reliability and validity(overall reliability is.930).The descriptive statistical results show students are satisfied with the relationship, pedagogical practice and environment in the current college English ecological classroom environment. However, students believe that their learning motivation and self-efficacy,need to be improved. The independent samples T-test find that in the perception ofcollege English ecological classroom environment, males’ evaluation of teaching methods is higher than females’ evaluation of teaching methods, and reaches a significant level. However, the perception of other factors among students of different genders are insignificant.Multiple regression analysis shows that ecological subjects and pedagogical practice have a significant predictive effect on the results of emergence. Both Ecological subjects’ relationship and ecological subjects and environment have a significant predictive effect on ecological subjects and pedagogical practice. Thus, ecological subjects’ relationship, ecological subjects and pedagogical practice, ecological subjects and environment have a certain influence on the results of emergence. It is hoped that the above findings can provide suggestions for the construction of an ecological classroom environment to improve college English teaching. |
