Mixed yes-no questions with interrogative pronouns have special structural forms and interrogative functions. They have two kinds of interrogative markers, namely interrogative pronouns and modal particles. They can be divided into two functional types: single level yes-no questions and dual level yes-no and interrogative questions. This paper makes a systematic study of mixed yes-no questions from the perspectives of syntactic structure type, semantic level, inquiry function characteristics, discourse strategy and diachronic formation track.Chapter one is the introduction, which mainly introduces the significance, progress, scope and methods of the research, and explains the source of the corpus in detail.Chapter two studies the syntactic types of mixed yes-no questions.Combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, this chapter describes and analyzes the syntactic structure and internal characteristics of five typical structures of mixed yes-no questions,i.e.causative pivotal structure, optative verb structure, psychological verb structure, tense auxiliary structure and free reference structure.Chapter three analyzes the semantic level and focus of mixed yes-no questions.According to the two kinds of constraints between the event attached to the interrogative pronoun and the modal words "Ma" and "Ba",that is,direct constraint and indirect constraint, this chapter discusses the semantic level and focus distribution of questions in various situations.Chapter four studies the inquiry function and discourse strategy of mixed yes-no questions. In terms of inquiry function characteristics: first, because of the different degree of doubt in communication, questions can take on different types of functions, such as acquiring knowledge and seeking confirmation;second, when questions have the dual functions of yes-no questions and interrogative questions at the same time, because of the indirect speech act,the dual-level question will have primary and secondary focus, with yes-no questions as the secondary focus, interrogative questions as the main focus, and the fulfilling of the dual functions is sequential. In terms of discourse strategy: driven by the need for politeness and economy, mixed yes-no questions are widely used, which is an optimization for simplicity.Chapter five discusses the formation of dual level yes-no and interrogative questions, which appeared in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty, and its formation track mainly includes two aspects: one is the combination of seek-confirmation questions and interrogative questions;the other is the rhetorical sentence with interrogative pronoun “Ma”,due to the weakening of the rhetorical tone,it evolves to the interrogative sentence with interrogative function, and forms a special sentence pattern with dual function of yes-no questions and interrogative questions.Chapter six summarizes the research results and shortcomings of this paper.
