| From CE 618 to CE 712,the early Tang period lasted for nearly a century.During this time, through the unremitting efforts and bold attempts of every poet of the early Tang Dynasty each in their own unique way, poetry gradually trickled down into the magnificent river of prosperous Tang poetry. In his book The Poetry of the Early Tang,North American Scholar Professor Stephen Owen observes the changing process of the entire early Tang poetry from the external macro perspective, and also explores the internal changes of poetry and other literature as broadly as possible, even reaching to the aesthetic landscape, trying to discern the inherent trends and contextual rules of the evolution of various styles. This thesis,"The Depiction of Nature in Tang Poetry: Discussion Focused on The Poetry of the Early Tang by Stephen Owen,is based on the poems related to the depiction of nature in The Poetry of the Early Tang. From the perspective of an overseas scholar,it investigates and discusses the deep cultural relationship between nature and humanities contained in the poetry of the early Tang Dynasty,as well as various aesthetic themes derived from it and new literature trend. As the basis of this article,in the introduction the development of overseas Sinology in North America and the research inheritance of the literary history of the Tang Dynasty, especially the translation and dissemination of Tang poetry in North America will be sorted out in the introduction. The first chapter is about the depiction of nature in court poetry. This chapter follows the former Dynasty Liang and Chen through the comparison and analysis of palace poetry and court poetry to explore the first theme of nature gradually formed in early Tang poetry--dignified.Chapter Two is about nature in retro poetry,a return to antiquity where poets constantly experiment and change the increasingly conservative court poetry style, forming another indignant and robust aesthetic theme in poetry. The third Chapter is about the microcosm of nature and enlightenment in the private domain.Author defines three types of garden poetry, and tries to explore the theme of microcosm nature and the cultural trends contained therein inside.Poetry has changed from the cultural attributes in the public domain to the artistic aesthetics in the private domain. The fourth chapter discusses the awakening of the poet’s subjective consciousness caused by the personalization about the microcosm of nature, and its effects on the fragmented aesthetics of nature in poetry and other styles, thus further triggering the poet’s reexamination of traditional culture and morals. |
