| Consecutive interpreting is an important form in interpreting field, which requires the interpreter to convey the speaker’s intentions with completeness, accuracy and smoothness. However,in the interpreting process, there is often information asymmetry, namely, the source language information sent by the speaker is not equivalent to the target language information translated by the interpreter.Information asymmetry may be manifested as information increase or information decrease. The information loss to be explored in this thesis belongs to information decrease. In consecutive interpreting, information loss is inevitable, which will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the interpreting quality, interpreters themselves and both communicative parties. In the last year’s study,as a freshman, the author has information loss frequently in the interpreting practice. In the process of reading related literature, the author finds that most previous studies focus on information loss in simultaneous interpreting or English-Chinese consecutive interpreting. The classification and cause of information loss in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting are still few.Based on this, the author designes this Chinese-English consecutive interpreting experiment.16 MTI students are selected as experimental subjects.President Xi Jinping’s 2018 New Year Address is selected as experimental material. This experimental report is completed by integrating and analyzing experimental data. This report has theoretical and practical significance. With Eco-translatology as the theoretical framework, the author makes analysis to the student interpreters’ performance in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, which is not only a significant application of Eco-translatology in interpreting research, but also proposes effective suggestions to reduce information loss in practice. The report consists of six chapters. The first chapter introduces the experimental background, experimental objectives, experimental significance and report structure. The second chapter is literature review. The author reviews the relevant researches of information loss and Eco-translatology in interpreting. After reviewing the relevant researches,it is confirmed that Eco-translatology can be used to guide the research of information loss in interpreting. The third chapter introduces the experimental environment, experimental material, experimental methods, experimental subject and experimental procedure. In Chapter Four, the author makes a quantitative analysis to the experimental results.Tables are made to show the frequency distribution of subjects’ information loss in linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension.Based on the data of the previous chapter,Chapter Five concludes the reasons of information loss. The author finds high information density, insufficient memory ability, insufficient bilingual ability, cultural differences and psychological pressure are the main reasons of information loss.Besides, the author proposes some suggestions under the guidance of Eco-translatology.The student interpreter is encouraged to carry out selective adaptation and adaptive selection from listening, memorizing, processing and delivering to reduce information loss and improve interpreting quality. In Chapter Six,the author makes a summary and states the limitations of this report. It is expected that other researchers can conduct more useful explorations on the information loss in interpreting. |
