Late Qing dynasty(1897-1911)witnessed an overwhelming literary movement best known as "Revolution in Fiction".At that period Chinese fictions gradually rose to the highest position of China’s national literature,and for the first time in Chinese history,literati recognized the artistic and social value of fiction.On its way to prominence,it drew lesson from both traditional literature and foreign novels,thus promoting the rise of new fiction.The Beginning of Chinese Modern Fictions was written by Professor Chen Pingyuan from Peking University,and it serves as an academic monograph on history of fictions.The book expounds the development of Chinese fictions from 1897-1916,and there is no full English version available now.The language features of the book are characterized by its formality and use of a great many literary terms,titles of book,culture-loaded words as well as Classical Chinese sentences,which add challenge to the translation practice.Besides,this thesis is a Chinese-English translation report of the Chapter Six of the book,it mainly introduces different novel genres in the late Qing dynasty,and the impact of foreign fiction on the development of Chinese fiction back then.Through the translation,the translator finds that Verschueren’s adaptation theory can be applied to the translation practice.Based on Verschueren’s adaptation theory,the translator selects some representative discourses as examples to analyze the problems encountered in the process of translating and adaptive methods adopted with an aim to achieve contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability.The translator divides the translation report into five chapters.The first chapter is introduction,which mainly introduces the translation task,objective of the translation practice,features of the source text.The second chapter is description of translation process,including preparation before translating,quality control in the process of translating and proofreading.The third chapter gives an account of Verschueren’s adaptation theory as well as its applicability.The fourth chapter is the case analysis,in which the translator presents some difficulties of the translation,and their solutions.The last chapter is summary,the translator makes a summary of the lessons drawn from the translation practice and the limitation of the translation report. |
