A Report On The Translation Of The Heat Of The Day Under The Guidance Of Text Typology

The Heat of the Day,taking World War II as a background,is one of literary novels by the Ireland writer Elizabeth Bowen.With a refined and exquisite style of writing,the author precisely portrays the psychology of the characters in the novel so as to display the emotional experience and complex mentality of people who suffered the bombing raid in London,revealing the theme of betrayal,self-discovery and dispossession.All these traits,presenting significant things through exquisite and refined descriptions,vivid and verisimilar plots,are the charm and also the unique style of Elizabeth’s novels.In translating the exquisite expressions of The Heat of the Day with a specific style,the author of this report chooses Text Typology by Katherine Reiss as the guiding theory of translation.The general principle of seeking similar form with an equivalent esthetic effect is observed on the basis of readability to overcome the difficulties of cultural differences in the translation practice.The problems occurred will be categorized into three formal aspects of lexis,syntax and rhetoric devices and made style analyses.Appropriate translation strategies and methods will be applied to solve these problems according to the translation principle of Text Typology.It finally comes to the following conclusion that the translation strategy of foreignization and the combination of literal translation and free translation are mostly adopted to effectively deal with esthetic effects conveyed by the literary form of the original after taking the linguistic customs of the target language into account.This report has five parts.The first part is the introduction to the text and its author,the task introduction and the theoretical basis.In the second part,the author of the report first discusses the stylistic analyses of the text,and then goes on to the determination of text types,and the translation strategies of form-focused texts based on Text Typology.The translation procedure is described at full length in the third chapter.Afterwards,the analyses of translation based on Text Typology are made at length to study the esthetic purpose of expressions and problems met,principles observed and techniques adopted from three aspects of words,sentence structures and rhetorical devices.The last is a reflection.
