| Studies have shown that repetitive learning can improve people’s memory, and when the stimulus project is repeated,it will produce a "repetiotion effect".Recently, researchers have found that in text reading, when a word is repeated before and after,it can promote the reader’s processing of the current fixation word, called the word repetition effect. But the researchers did not say whether the repetiotion effect was affected by semantic plausibility. Therefore, the boundary paradigm(Rayner,1975)was used to investigate whether the parafoveal-foveal overlap can facilitate the processing of the current fixation word, that is,whether the semantic plausibility will affect the repetition effects of lexical processing under the condition of implausible and plausible semantics,.This study consists of two experiments.Exp1 investigates whether the parafoveal-foveal overlap can facilitate the processing of the current fixation word under the condition of implausible semantics. The single factor four levels within-subject design was used, and the experimental conditions were divided into identical preview(there was no boundary change, the preview word and the fixation word were not the same word, but it was plausible in the sentence),repeated but implausible preview(preview and fixation words are the same word, but two words cannot form a double word, and are implausible in the sentence),unrelated preview(preview and fixation words are not the same word, and it is implausible in the sentence)and the pseudowords preview(the pseudowords is composed of inappropriate Chinese character parts, the pseudowords does not exist, and has no meaning). The results showed that the durations time in the identical condition was significantly shorter than that under the other three conditions in the fixation word, the preview word and the whole word area, which showed a standard identical preview effect.Secondly, the durations time in the identical condition was significantly shorter than repeated but implausible condition, and no facilitate effect was found. This isinconsistent with the results of the alphabetic language study. The reason for this difference may be the readers of the alphabetic language can’t obtain the semantic information from the preview.,which has a repetition facilitate effect. However, because the particularity of Chinese may lead to different preprocessing,Chinese readers can extract the semantics from the preview, which has a certain interference with the processing of the current fixation information, has the effect of this inconsistency.Exp2 investigates whether the parafoveal-foveal overlap can facilitate the processing of the current fixation word under the condition of plausible semantics. The single factor and four levels design was used. The conditions were divided into identical preview, repeated and plausible preview(The preview and fixation words are the same word, and the two words can form a double word.It is plausible in the sentence),unrelated preview and pseudowords preview). Results showed that there was no significant difference between the identical and repeated and plausible conditions in the fixation word and preview word area, and the durations time under the repeated plausible preview condition was significantly shorter than the unrelated and pseudowords conditions, there is a repetition facilitate effect. In addition, the evidence of repeated facilitate is found again in the whole word area, that is,the Go-past time under the identical condition is significantly longer than the repetition plausible, and the skipping rate under the identical condition is significantly higher than the repetition plausible, the results showed that repeated condition will facilitate word identification when preview word is plausible in the sentence. In addition,in order to investigate the influence of semantic plausibility on repetition effect, this study combines the data of two experiments, and uses semantic plausibility as a between-subject variable.,the preview type as a within-subject variable, and the eye movement measures as a dependent variable to further examine whether semantic plausibility affects the repetition effects of lexical processing. As a result, the interaction between semantic plausibility and preview type was significant in the TT on the fixation words. In the case of implausible semantics(Experiment 1),the durations time in the identical preview is significantly shorter than the repetitioncondition. In the case of plausible semantics(experiment 2),there is no significant difference between the two conditions;the interaction between semantic plausibility and preview type was significant in the skip on the preview words. In the case of implausible semantics, the skip in the identical preview is significantly higher than the repeated condition, which is significantly lower than the repeated condition in the case of plausible semantics;Significant interactions have occurred in all measures on the whole words. In the case of plausible semantics, the Go-past time under identical is significantly longer than the repeated condition, the skip is significantly lower than the repeated conditions,in the case of implausible semantics, the Go-past time under the identical condition was significantly shorter than the repeated condition, and there was no significant difference in the skip.In terms of other fixation duration indexes, the fixation duration in identical was significantly shorter than that in repeated condition when the semantics were implausible, and there was no significant difference between them when the semantics were plausible.Based on the experimental results of this study, the following conclusions can be found:(1)the study found that repeatition can facilicate the process of a word;(2)in the process of Chinese reading, readers can extract semantic plausibility information from previewed words, and semantic plausibility will affect the repetition effect;(3)this study found a stable parafoveal-on-foveal effect, supporting the parallel model. |
