A Translation Practice Report On Turfgrass Science Terminology ——In The Case Of Fundamentals Of Turfgrass Management

The source text of this translation task is excerpted from Fundamentals of Turfgrass Management,an American textbook on Turfgrass Science.While Turfgrass Science has been developing very well in western countries,its advancement still has a long way to go in China.In this translation task,special attention is paid to the translation of Turfgrass Science terminology.Turfgrass Science terminology is one type of scientific terminology.A lot of researches have been done on scientific terminology translation domestically and many translation principles and methods have been put forward by scholars.In the translation of Turfgrass Science terminology covered in this book,the translator chooses to be guided by the three principles（accuracy,concision and normalization）and ten methods of scientific terminology translation put forward by Zhang Yan.All the terms extracted from the source text are classified into three groups: “names of grasses”,“commercial cultivar names” and “interdisciplinary terms”.On the basis of the classification,“acceptance through common practice translation”,“creative translation”,“sequential word order translation”,“approaching from the reverse side”,“simplification translation” and “conception transformation” are applied to Turfgrass Science terms.In addition,a small termbase of Turfgrass Science is built up,serving as a reference for future translation and researches in this area.
