| In order to communicate with each other and learn skills, the craftsman in Jingdezhen gradually produced a unique industry terminology during more than a thousand years’ porcelain making process.Such industrial language in these porcelain manufacturing processes is very rich, including raw materials, fuels, pigments, processes, tools, shapes, and measurements.Although there are many researchers dealing with ceramics and ceramic culture, with the development of modern machine productions, the promotion of Mandarin in school and the lack of systematic summary,Jingdezhen ceramic dialect terminology is slowly forgotten. On the other hand, there are few authoritative books on ceramic terminology translation. Some of them are Western terms, some are about Chinese ceramics, and some are translated for studying ceramic crafts. However, the contents of these translations do not take into account the dialectal issues in ceramics, but translations from the surface of the literal meaning cannot fully reveal the rich ceramics industry skills and local cultural implication in the ceramic terminology.Through searching the literature, making surveys and interviews, this thesis was collected the ceramic dialect terminology, analyzed the source of the dialect composition in Jingdezhen region, classified the traditional handicraft porcelain process and technology so as to form a more complete terminology system.By comparing and contrasting existing ceramic English translation terminology, three translation methods are proposed for the English translation from the perspective of thick translation and cultural communication and reader acceptance of the target language. They are first, free translation and explanation, then reasonable reference to the original Chinese transliteration method and thirdly explaining the abstract contents through the two-dimensional plane symbols and the interpretation of the form.According to the above methods, the English corpus of the above terminology is translated, meanwhile, the author compares the differences between advantages and disadvantages of the existing English translations to avoid the lost, missing or misunderstood and misinterpreted in the process of English translation, including the linguistic features, local cultures, customs contained in Jingdezhen ceramic dialect terminology.Thick translation can reconstruct the historical atmosphere of Jingdezhen’s traditional porcelain, production activities and deeply understand the context of Jingdezhen’s porcelain craftsmen from different regions, then it explains the ceramic production processes, shapes and decorations to readers. It defends the authenticity of the history of ceramic culture and helps readers understand and respect the ceramic narrative source language culture. It can also benefit foreigners understand the origin, writing style and deep-seated semantics of the Jingdezhen ceramic culture dialect, and let them further understand the rich history and culture of Jingdezhen ceramics. |
