Anita Fetzer is a professor of University of Augsburg who is also a member of theAdvisory Board of the international pragmatic journal Internet Pragmatics. Her masterpiece on linguistics Recontextualizing Context:Grammaticality Meets Appropriateness focuses on the connectedness of grammaticality, contexts and appropriateness. The most striking features of the book are the frequent use of linguistic terms and complex syntactic structure. With the translation of a part of the book, the writer makes a comparative study of her translation and her supervisor’s revision, and then summarizes the E-C translation techniques of academic works.Put it differently, the paper is a report on the translation practice and reflections of the writer. The report introduces the objectives, manners and process of the writer’s translation practice at the very beginning, then gives a brief literature review of earlier research on the book.Besides, the writer generalizes the content and the main features of the book. Finally, based on a contrast of the writer’s translation and her supervisor’s revision, the paper offers a detailed analysis with concrete examples and works out such translation techniques as follows:firstly, the translation of linguistic terms should be anchored to the principles of accuracy, readability and transparency.Secondly, the translation of attributive clauses should combine the methods of preposition, postposition and integration with the underlying logical relations.Thirdly, special consideration should be given to the omission of conjunctions when we render adverbial clauses.Meanwhile, when translating long sentences,we ought to analyze syntactic structure and then integrate the translation techniques of sequence, inversion and division.Against these backgrounds, the paper concludes with a summary of limitations of the writer’s translation and experience learnt from the translation practice.A better reflection of the translation practice will not only improve the writer’s translation ability, but also contribute to the final completion and publication of the book in Chinese.
