Ideological Manipulation In Translation

For a long time,Yanfu’s three-character principle of "faithfulness","expressiveness" and "elegance" has been considered as a general rule for evaluating a piece of translation work.Usually people take for granted that mistranslation breaks the rule of "faithfulness".Even though the objectivity and fairness of news also require of news translators to be faithful in their works,news mistranslation is great in number and scholars always attributed this to.Translators’ insufficiency of language proficiency and cultural ability.In fact,sometimes translators choose to mistranslate deliberately,called intentional mistranslation.The essence of intentional mistranslation is translator’s rewriting of an original text out of the cultural requirements of the target language.At present,although people found that national ideology makes different in news translation,there are rarely studies on news’ intentional mistranslation.This research is conducted on the basis of Lefevere’s theory of rewriting and Professor Xie Tianzhen’s definition of intentional mistranslation to analyze the translation phenomenon in some China-related reports.The first part of this paper is introduction.The second chapter explains the definition of Lefebvre’s Manipulation theory and Professor Xie Tianzhen’s mistranslation theory.The third chapter elaborates in detail how translators select words and employ translation strategies to mistranslate news intentionally.The forth chapter gives the reasons why translators mistranslate news intentionally.By comparing the differences between the source text and the target text,this paper discusses the reasons about news’intentional mistranslation through analyzing reader’s expectation and their mode of thinking;the differences in social concepts,values,social system and political positions between China and other Western countries.The fifth chapter is conclusion that concludes the necessity of intentional mistranslation in news translation.Although great effort has been put into the study of the thesis,yet it is far from satisfaction and there is still much room to be desired,which,I hope,will become my future endeavor.
