Listening is not only an important channel for us to get comprehensive language inputs, but also the most important method of communication in English. Thus, listening plays an essential role in language learning. However, students’ listening ability is very poor in China for lack of a strategy sense. In recent years, with the development of language strategies training,a large number of scholars at home and abroad have explored the relationship between metacognitive strategy training and listening comprehension. Most studies suggest that metacognitive strategies can greatly improve the learners’listening proficiency. However, most of them were undertaken among the undergraduates.Based on the previous research, this paper tries to further explore how to apply metacognitive strategy training to the English listening teaching in high schools in China so as to improve teaching efficiency.Ninety senior Grade One students from two parallel classes participated in the 18-week listening teaching experiment. They were divided into two groups. The experimental one received metacognitive strategy training while the control one were taught in the traditional way. This experiment is designed to deal with two specific questions:(1)Can metacognitive strategy training raise the students’ strategy awareness?(2)Can metacognitive strategies greatly improve the students’ listening performance? The findings show that the integrating metacognitive plan has a great effect on enhancing students’ strategy awareness and improving their listening proficiency. |
