Since our entry into the new century,many English teachers and educational theorists in China have been doing profound research into the English teaching in senior high schools,thus enriching the width and depth of the English teaching and its research.Many scholars think that the English teaching in senior high schools in the past overemphasized the impartation of knowledge,but neglected the development of students’ ability in the practical use of English.If we want to improve the situation,we must enable our students to combine their knowledge with their ability organically by means of the situational teaching.Obviously,under the environment of the quality education,the situational teaching is a scientific and reasonable teaching model,which is also the voice of the majority of English teachers in senior high schools.The situational teaching mainly refers to the teaching model in which the real-life situation and the social culture are regarded as its background,and the learning environment as its teaching center.This teaching model pays great attention to learners’ social nature,the significance for their learning,their social and historical backgrounds as well as the social culture.The author of this thesis makes a study of the situational designs and their application to the English classroom teaching in senior high schools by means of the Communicative Instructional Theory,the Situational Learning Theory,the Eco-linguistic Theory and the Theory of Second Language Acquisition.etc.and on the basis of the basic principles of situational designs.Then,the author makes an analysis and assessment of its teaching effect.The result indicates that the application of the situational teaching in senior high schools has achieved a remarkable teaching effect.Meanwhile,the author also points out some relevant misunderstandings of the situational teaching.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions for optimizing and improving the situational teaching in the English class in senior high schools as follows:Situational designs should be made with the teaching activities as their aims.The created situations should be realistic and close to students’ life.Situational designs should be diversified and flexible,with an emphasis on the exchange and communication.Ways of assessments and teaching methods should be as diversified as possible.The situational teaching should base itself on the students and teachers must have a strong controlling ability.It is hoped that this thesis can provide some useful reference for the situational teaching of English in senior high schools.
