Individualism And Collectivism In The Current Chinese Society Reflected By Network News:An Analysis Based On Conceptual Metaphor

Since Hofstede proposed the concept of individualism and collectivism as one of the cultural dimensions,researchers in the field of cognitive psychology,personality,neuroscience,organizational management and decision-making,etc.carried out a number of studies,but few studies explore the relationship between metaphor and individualism,collectivism.The language and culture are closely linked,metaphor rooted in culture,research on culture from the language point of view will help to deepen understanding of the relationship between the two.In this paper,a total of four study are conducted to examine the relationship between them from different angles.The first study using paradigms of priming culture and vertical spatial metaphor tried to explore the influence of cultural orientation on vertical spatial preference by reaction time,and it did not get the significant results.The second study uses paradigms of priming culture and inside-outside spatial metaphor and found no connection between different cultural orientation and space preferences.Since quantitative researches were unable to obtain significant results,the third study adopting Chinese corpus collected metaphorical expression of collectivism-individualism,summed conceptual metaphor.The fourth study collects different network news topics’meaningful comments,count the frequency of the first person singular pronoun and the first person plural pronoun under different topics in order to distinguish the topic of individual and collective property.It was found that entertainment and social news are of individual property,military and politics are typical collective topics.The paper attempts to prove the relationship between cultural orientation and spatial metaphor by behavioral data,this is of creative value.It is innovative that the paper study individualism and collectivism from metaphor point of view by applying corpus.Using synonymous to distinguish the network news topics’attributes,it has some practical significance.Four studies showed some enlightening meaning,providing assistance and support for future studies.
