Using iconology analysis as the foundation,combining several subjects’ methods such as artistic sociology,history and literature,this paper combs the basic information of He Dazi’s painting "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" in Qing Dynasty,analyzes the relation between image and text in it,returns to the historical context in order to illustrate a new pattern of choosing characters and presentation of the relation between image and text in paintings of gentlewomen(shinü hua)in Ming and Qing Dynasties,and also illustrates the multiple meanings of this pattern.The main body of this paper is divided into four chapters,mainly including the following four parts:Based on the literature data of Qing Dynasty’s palace,the first chapter begins with the catalog of artwork "First Editions of Precious Collection of the Stone Moat(Shiqu Baoji)" in Qing Dynasty’s palace,collects and investigates the basic information such as author,binding content and collection of "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)".On the basis of this,according to historical data such as"General Genealogy of the Manchu Families of the Eight Banners(Baqi Manzhoushizu Tongpu)" and "the summary of Qing Dynasty’s palace Neiwufu’s files",this chapter carefully investigates the Manchu official He Dazi’s life,and proves the possibility and validity of officials’ painting activities.At the same time,according to historical data in Qing Dynasty’s palace like "Guo Chao Gong Shi Xu Bian",this chapter manages to restore the condition of collection place,Chonghua Palace,of"Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)",and proves that this place has various cultural functions,which make a good place for Qianlong and his officials to appreciate and evaluate "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)".The second chapter uses the method of iconology,and analyzes the twelve albums of Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" specifically.Firstly,this chapter basically describes the right images and left texts of each album in order to guide the readers to understand basic circumstances about the albums.Secondly,this chapter investigates the relation between image and text,which concludes the relationship between the image and its literary source,as well as the relationship between image and poetry,in order to deepen the reader’s understanding of the traditional theme and construct the world combining of imagery and story.At the same time,through the analysis of the relationship between image and text to reveal He Dazi and Qianlong’s artistic skills,this chapter elaborates the author’s hidden intentions and thoughts.Finally,this chapter analyzes the reasons for selecting each figure.The third chapter investigates "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" in its historical context.Through the analysis of the changes of the ideological trend,literary types,and the major social attitude to women of the Ming and Qing Dynasties,this chapter clarifies the social foundations and cultural factors of "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" coming into being.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the value and significance of "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" itself.This part can be divided into two parts,the external comparison and the internal analysis.The external comparison concludes comparison through combing the evolution of paintings of gentlewomen(shinü hua)and comparison to other albums at the same time.The internal analysis is the summary of the relation between the image and text in "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)".Then this chapter clarifies that "Li Shu Cui Xiu" embodies a new pattern of paintings of gentlewomen(shinü hua)in Ming and Qing Dynasties,and the blending trend of the court art and the folk art.Finally,this chapter investigates the significance of creating "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)",and exposes the hidden ideology thinking such as the gender power and ethnic identity.Finally,this paper holds the following views.Firstly,the image and text in"Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" vividly show ancient classic images of women,which have high artistic value.Meanwhile,it reveals the diversity and inclusive of Qianlong’s type of appreciating the female.Secondly,"Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" uses the form "history on the left and image on the right"and a variety of character images,which reflect a new pattern of paintings of gentlewomen(shinii hua)in Ming and Qing Dynasties and the blending trend of the court art and the folk art.Thirdly,due to the liberation of intellectuals’ thought in the middle and late Ming dynasty,the rise of the popular literature,and the new type and angle of social appreciating toward females,paintings of gentlewomen(shinü hua)which has always been debased are able to revive in Ming and Qing Dynasties.Fourthly,although "Gathering Gems of Beauty(Lishucuixiu)" has many artistic creativity and innovation,the aesthetic toward females in it is still a product driven by the males’ power,and it also demonstrates that Qianlong adds ideology considerations such as ethnic identity and relationship as a ruler.
