BACKGROUND: Children with epilepsy have different degrees of impairment in learning, cognition, behavior and emotion.According to statistics, about a quarter of children with epilepsy are noticed to have delayed cognitive skills, and the factors leading to this impairment are various. This paper aims to analyze the related influencing factors of intellectual skills in children with epilepsy.METHODS:155 children who were diagnosed as epilepsy in the department of pediatrics of Fujian Provincial Hospital from May 2020 and January 2021.All the detail information were recorded including name, gender, age, education, classification(urban or rural),paternal education, maternal education, education of the main caregiver of the child, main parenting style of the parent, family economic level, maternal age at pregnancy, parity, gestational age, mode of delivery, maternal condition at pregnancy, condition at birth, postnatal growth and development, health from birth to three years of age, family history of mental illness, family history of epilepsy, history of head trauma, and change in score after illness;epilepsy-related conditions included: age at onset, form of onset, presence of epilepsy syndrome, number of convulsive seizures, control of convulsions, comorbidity, electroencephalogram, cranial MRI,type of antiepileptic drugs, and medication compliance. In the same time,Hyperactivity Symptom Examination Scale(SNAP-IV)test,Children’s Difficulty Questionnaire(QCD)test,China-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children test were performed. The data were statistically described.Univariate analysis was performed by Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test.Multiple linear regression analysis was performed for the factors with statistical significance by univariate analysis.RESULTS:(1)The mean IQ of epileptic children was 95.18 points, which was lower than that of normal children. The results of the test were very abnormal in 5(3.2%),abnormal in 9(5.8%),higher than usual in 21(13.5%),usual in 62(40%),lower than usual in 27(17.4%),borderline in 17(11.0%),and mental retardation in 14(9.0%).(2)Univariate analysis of IQ in children with epilepsy was statistically significant: paternal education, maternal education, main caregivers’ education, family economic income, parity, postnatal growth and development, change in performance after illness, presence or absence of family history of epilepsy, age of onset, epileptic syndrome, control of convulsions, type of antiepileptic drugs and QCD(P < 0.05).(3)Postnatal growth and development, education level of main caregivers of children, age of onset of epilepsy, and type of antiepileptic drugs were correlated with IQ(P < 0.05),of which positive correlation was postnatal growth and development, education level of main caregivers of children, age of onset, and negative correlations was parity and type of antiepileptic drugs.CONCLUSION: Postnatal growth and development level, education level of main caregivers, age of onset of epilepsy were positively correlated with IQ in epileptic children, while the type of AEDs and parity were negatively correlated with IQ in epileptic children.
