| Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thyroid hormones with the risk of non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents with depression. Methods: A total of 383 adolescent patients with depression aged 13 to20 years were included. We divided them into two groups(NSSI and non-NSSI group)according to whether whether accompanied by NSSI behavior. The levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants(serum albumin, total bilirubin and uric acid)and thyroid hormones(free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine and thyrotropin)were determined, and the differences between the two groups were compared. Results: A decrease in albumin, total bilirubin, uric acid and free triiodothyronine levels was observed in patients with non-suicidal self-injury than those without non-suicidal self-injury.Correlation analysis revealed that free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine were positively correlated with albumin.Furthermore, thyroid stimulating hormone was found to have a significant negative correlation with total bilirubin, with free triiodothyronine having a significant positive correlation with uric acid. Conclusions: These findings suggest that variations in antioxidant and thyroid hormones levels can be related to non-suicidal self-injury in depressed adolescents. |
