ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the correlation between periodontal conditions of the adjacent teeth of an implant and peri-implant health.Materials and methodsClinical and radiographic assessments were performed on 89 dental implants in 84 patients. The probing depth, gingival recession/mucosal recession, clinical attachment loss, keratinize gingiva/keratinize mucosa(KG/KT)and marginal bone level(MBL)of the implant(IMP)and the adjacent teeth of the implant(ADT)were recorded.Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the correlation between peri-implant health and periodontal conditions.ResultsWhen considering all of the ADT and IMP,no significant MBL correlation was observed between ADT-N and IMP-N.The MBL between the ADT-N and IMP-N showed a weak correlation(r=0.207,p=0.034)when ADT-N MBL ≥ 2 mm.The MBL between ADT-N and IMP-N showed moderate correlations when ADT-N MBL ≥ 3 mm(r=0.371,p=0.012)and ADT-N MBL ≥ 4 mm(r=0.470,p=0.049).No significant MBL correlations were found between ADT-N and IMP-N based on the different stratification of IMP-N.Of all the implants, the correlation between ADT KG and IMP KT was significant(r=0.537,p<0.001).There was a moderate correlation between the ADT KG and IMP KT in implants with two ADTs(r=0.569,p<0.001).ConclusionThere was a significant MBL correlation between IMP and ADT when ADT-N MBL ≥ 2 mm.As the MBL of the ADT-N increased, the MBL correlation of the ADT-N and the IMP-N gradually increased. There was a significant moderate correlation between the implant KT and its adjacent tooth KG.In clinical practice, the health of the ADT can be appropriately referred to estimate the health of the implant.
