Objective: Sarcandra glabra(Thunb.)is traditional Chinese herbal medicine, our study aims to investigate the prevention of Sarcandra glabra on radiation-induced lung injury(RILI).Methods: 50 patients, who were pathologically diagnosed with lung cancer or esophagus cancer or thymoma and accepted radiotherapy for the first time, were randomly divided into 2 groups.the study group(n=25)received a Sarcandra glabra orally of 600 mg triple per day from the 1st day of radiotherapy, the control group(n=25)accepted radiotherapy only.During radiotherapy,The serum levels of transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGF-β1),tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α)and interleukin-6(IL-6)were measured before and after radiotherapy.Several indexes of pulmonary function test were compared preand post-therapeutically 3 months after the radiotherapy, the incidence of RILI was also statistically analyzedResult: The serum levels of TGF-β1,TNF-α and IL-6 in the two groups increased with time after the beginning of radiotherapy, and decreased 3 months after radiotherapy. At the end of radiotherapy, the levels of TGF-β 1,TNF-αand IL-6 in the study group were significantly lower than the control group(P<0.05).The ratio of the forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity(FEV1%)and carbon monoxide diffusion volume(DLCO)of pulmonary function decreased significantly 3 months after radiotherapy in control(P<0.05).The incidence of RILI of the study group and control group were 24 % and 52 %,respectively(P<0.05).The response rate of two groups were 76% and 84%,respectively(P>0.05).Conclusion: Sarcandra glabra can down-regulate the expression of TGF-β1 and inhibit the release of inflammatory factors and protect the lung function.Sarcandra glabra have obvious activity on prevention of RILI.Sarcandra glabra can reduce the occurrence of RILI during radiotherapy. |
