Research Of Taiwan Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Development

The human history has millions of years, but today we rarely notice that in thepast one century, the average lifespan of human has been doubled. Since the discoverof aspirin in1897, the western medicine made the lifespan elongated and the lifequality also improved. However, as the development of western medicine, there arestill many diseases that can’t be well treated. In the meantime, antibiotic abuse alsoconfuses people all the time. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has a long historyand the nature idea creates a good opportunity for the development of TCM. TCM ofTaiwan and the mainland has the same origin. In recent years, with the development ofbiotechnology TCM gets a promising future. In Taiwan, biotechnology is seen as astar industry and the government tries its best to support TCM industry.In this study, the developmental condition, disadvantages and problems ofTaiwan TCM industry were analyzed by SWOT, Five Forces and Value Chainanalysis. For these problems, some related advices were given. This study mainlymentions six parts. The first part is introduction. In this part, the background, purposeand literature review were introduced; Sencond, the developmental condition ofinternational TCM industry was made a summary. Third, the structure of TaiwanTCM industry including the developmental state, policies and pharmaceuticaltechnology was analyzed; Fourth, The problems of Taiwan TCM value chain wasintroduced and some advices were given; The final part is conclusion including thecountermeasure and advice to improve the development of Taiwan TCM industry.In short, Taiwan TCM industry has a couple of advantages compared withChinese mainland, but it also has many disadvantages. For example, Chinese herbalmedicine quality is not good, research input is not equal, laws and regulations areimperfect, enterprise scale is too small and most of products were used for domesticconsumption and so on. For these problems, some suggestions were given: Strengthencross-Straits TCM industrial cooperation, perfect laws and regulations, construct agood industrial environment, protect TCM patent, perfect the financial service systemof TCM industry, promote mergers of minor enterprise, broaden the marketingchannel and strive to develop traditional Chinese medicine for health care. It is helpfulto make Taiwan adapt to the trend of the world TCM industrial development andaccelerate the modernized and internationalized process.
