| China is the country with the largest number of children and teenagers in the world, and there are now about 180 million children living in cities.Caring for children’s growth, protecting their rights and interests, and creating a comfortable and livable living environment for them is a social responsibility,as well as a necessary condition for improving their physical and mental health and achieving sustainable urban development. However, urban children are currently facing various crises such as insufficient space for activities, worrying health level and frequent psychological problems, which are also serious problems faced by China in promoting the construction of child-friendly cities. Therefore,as the main spatial carrier for children’s growth and life, the quality of the spatial environment in urban residential areas is crucial to the overall growth of children.Based on the above background, this study focuses on the activity space of urban settlements, and analyzes the relationship between children’s activities and the spatial environment of settlements from the perspective of children through theoretical foundation research and field research analysis.Based on the availability theory in the field of ecological psychology, the study analyzes the availability of children’s activities in the settlement environment, conducts field research in multi-story settlements in Shanghai, summarizes the existing problems in the urban settlement environment based on the results of the research, and carries out a joint study on children’s activities and the settlement environment.Based on the research and analysis,we propose a corresponding design methodology based on the study of environmental availability, and summarize the design optimization strategies for child-friendly activity spaces in residential areas by combining the child-friendly design principles and applying them in practice. This paper takes a child-friendly perspective as an entry point to re-examine the impact of the environmental composition of urban settlements on children’s growth and development, and to explore design strategies for the optimization and enhancement of activity spaces in settlements. On the one hand,it responds to China’s child-friendly policy on community governance, and on the other hand,it satisfies the current pursuit of children and residents for a better life, which is important for promoting spatial planning development and child-friendly city construction. |
