Unconventional Village—Research On Rule Analysis And Design Application Of Shape Grammar

Traditional villages in China are the materialization of different characteristics of nature and culture under different geographical conditions,and most of them have evolved through long-term self-organization.They have varied and unified spatial texture and courtyard forms,showing the most significant characteristics of "Harmony and difference".Since our country to promote the new rural construction,however,some local governments to perform a series of collective construction projects,"imitating" the planning and construction mode of urban settlements,quickly built a lot of large-scale,standardized,intensive,low-cost,"barracks" characteristics of the new type of rural settlements,but lost the inherent spatial and morphological characteristics of traditional villages.Based on the above background,this thesis explores an "Unconventional Village" design mode that can continue the traditional rural spatial texture and courtyard form,in order to provide reference for the current realization of highquality rural settlement construction."Unconventional Village" is a design mode that decodes and inherits the "genes" of traditional Chinese villages by using new methods such as shape grammar.By revealing the formal rules of the phenomenon of self-organizing "growth" of traditional villages,it is applied in the process of rural renewal and construction,aiming to better continue the inherent traditional features of villages.In the research of "Unconventional Village",the application of generative design methods such as shape gramma can analyze the corpus of the selected village in a graphical way,and decode the implicit design language,and then realize the "emergence" of shapes through recursive derivation of shape rules,giving the design results of "Unconventional Village" the style and features of "harmony and difference".In this thesis,shape grammar is used as methodology,and the sixth graduation design of "Unconventional Village" in architecture major of Shandong Jianzhu University is selected as the research object.The generation process of "Unconventional Village" design based on shape grammar is expounded,and the effectiveness and feasibility of shape grammar in illustrating and reproducing traditional village features are verified,and typical villages are selected to apply and verify the shape grammar of rural housing design.This thesis expounds from the following four aspects:（1）Theory,method and case analysis of shape grammar.By sorting out the related theories of linguistics and the theoretical and applied researches of shape grammar,the origin and definition of shape grammar are traced,and the principle of graphic calculation of shape grammar is explained.Taking the shape grammar of Wright’s prairie house as an example,the application of shape grammar to the research and interpretation of existing design cases is explained.Combined with the analysis of related cases,the extension of shape grammar is explored,including parametric shape grammar,description grammar,parallel grammar,graph grammar and so on.（2）Shape grammar analysis and design application strategy.Firstly,the construction methods of shape grammar based on shape vocabulary and spatial relations are summarized.Secondly,the implementation method of shape grammar in analysis application,design application and computer program application are explained.Finally,the construction method and implementation method of shape grammar are integrated,and the comprehensive application framework of shape grammar is constructed based on the following six steps,and the key elements of each step are illustrated by examples: 1.Corpus selection and corpus construction;2.Matching of shape vocabulary and spatial relations;3.The application of shape grammar as an analysis tool;4.Determining the initial shape and shape rules;5.The application of shape grammar as a design tool;6.Application of computer aided design program.（3）Application analysis of shape grammar of "Unconventional Village".The origin of the "Unconventional Village" research project of Shandong Architecture University is summarized.Three graduation designs of "Unconventional Village" are selected as the main objects.Based on the comprehensive application framework of shape grammar,shape grammar is constructed from the residential layout level and housing courtyard level to describe its design style respectively.（4）Study on the application of shape grammar in rural settlement.Based on the above "Unconventional Village" grammar study,according to the shape grammar comprehensive application framework,taking Zhuo village in Yantai City of Shandong Province as an example,shape grammar is constructed from residential layout level and housing courtyard level building respectively,in order to decode and reproduce Zhuo village spatial texture and traditional courtyard form.Finally,the design results are compared with the current situation to complete the verification.In conclusion,through the interpretation of "Unconventional Village" design mode and the analysis of representative research results,it is confirmed that the comprehensive application process based on shape grammar can continue the traditional rural features to a certain extent,which provides a new method and idea for the design of beautiful rural construction in China.However,there are still few studies on the application of shape grammar in the field of architecture in China,and the research on the relationship between rural design and shape grammar needs to be further supplemented,so that it can be more and better applied in the design process of high-quality rural construction.
