The rapid urbanization since the reform and opening up has promoted the socio-economic transformation of our country’s rural areas, and has had an all-round impact on rural settlements. In this context, rural settlements continue to show various practical problems and trends of overall shrinkage. In order to seek development opportunities from shrinkage, many scholars have turned their attention to the concept of "smart shrinkage" that has emerged in the European and American planning circles in recent years.Perhaps this concept can provide new ideas and enlightenment for our country to improve the reality of the decline of rural functions and the deterioration of the human settlement environment. This paper takes the rural areas of Nanjing as an example.Based on the rural statistical data on the scale of "city area-street unit"(mainly street/township unit),this paper dynamically tracks the transition of rural production and life activities and space since 2000,and reveals the evolutionary laws and problems of rural settlements in Nanjing. Finally,it discusses the planning strategy and development direction of rural residential space in Nanjing from the perspective of "smart shrinkage".The paper consists of five parts:The first part is the basic research. It mainly elaborates the research background, research significance, relevant research progress at home and abroad, and sorts out the content and methods of this research. The second part is the background research.Based on the definition of rural settlements, smart shrinkage and other related concepts,it expounds the social and economic overview of rural areas in Nanjing and combs the realistic background of the transition of human settlements,in order to reveal the policy system, economic development, spatial reconstruction and other background factors that affect rural development. The third part is model indicators and research ideas.Based on the "activity-space" two-dimensionality of rural residents’ production and life,it constructs a theoretical model that interprets the transition of rural settlements;based on the graphical theoretical model,it selects the relevant statistical data and construct the system based on the street(township)unit;finally,it optimizes and refines the existing research ideas from three aspects: model reconstruction and optimization, transition stage division, and analysis dimension expansion. The fourth part is empirical research and theoretical interpretation.According to the three-dimensional dimensions of time, space, and time-space integration,it analyzes the phase trends, spatial differentiation laws, evolution paths and other characteristics of the transition of rural settlements in Nanjing since2000;then,it further theoretically interpret the transition mechanism of rural settlements from the perspectives of macro-systems,development economics, spatial production, and spatial inertia. The fifth part is the discussion of problems and strategies. After summarizing the realistic dilemma of rural human settlements in Nanjing and explaining the "smart shrinkage",it proposes a planning strategy for rural residential space in Nanjing from the perspective of "smart shrinkage" based on the three perspectives of system, economy, and space,.The main body of the paper is about 90,000 words, and there are 144 charts in total.
