| With the development of social economy, shopping mall is gradually becoming an important place for people’s public daily activities. The increasing public participation has enhanced the publicness of shopping malls as urban spaces. However, the nature of shopping mall is still a private space,a huge “comprehensive store”created by the private entrepreneurs or social capitals, whose core purpose is to earn commercial profits rather than for the public interests, which constitutes a kind of antagonistic relationship with the real urba n public space.Shopping malls create many scenes of public life in order to attract people to enter the buildings and make them stay as long as possible in them to spend as much money as possible.By combining the functions of the genuine urban public spaces, the shopping center forms a kind of“inverted city” within its interior. In recent years, with the rapid development of new technologies such as digital technology and mobile Internet,as well as the new economy such as experience economy, shopping centers have undergone profound changes in architectural form, spatial structure and functional organization, however, their functional characteristics of complex urban public space are still maintained and become increasingly distinct.Based on the concept of “inverted city”,this paper studies the complex functional spaces of shopping malls, and explores their formation mechanism, performance characteristics and future development trend. The main contents of this study can be divided into five chapters, which are summarized as follows:The first chapter mainly discusses the resea rch background, research purpose and significance of the study, explains the relevant concepts and defines the research scope.Through the method of literature collection, this paper summarizes the research status and practical development of shopping malls both at home and abroad, and expounds the main contents, research methods and research framework of this paper. The second chapter introduces the concept of “inverted city”,which is the basis of this research, and expounds the main ideas of the structural inversions and semantic inversions of the shopping malls,as well as its guiding role in this research. The genealogical analysis method and space syntax analysis method are introduced in this chapter and their help to this study are also explained. In the third chapter, the characteristics of the complex fu nctional spaces of shopping malls are systematically studied and theoretically constructed.Firstly, the essential characteristics of the complex functional space s of modern shopping malls are analyzed, which are the features of “other spaces” and modern social spectacles. Then it analyzes the new features of the complex functional space s of shopping malls in the digital age,and elaborates on the theor ies of spatial transduction, tuning of place and experience economy. The fourth chapter, using the methods of data consulting and empirical research, focuses on the characteristics of the traffic space s of shopping malls are combined with the urban street scenes, and comprehensively uses the analysis of space syntax and other methods to study and classify the relevant features of three different trafficorganized shopping malls. At the same time, the research is also combined with the actual empirical case studies. The fifth chapter, analyzes the key features of shopping malls’ non-traffic spaces which are combined with the characteristics of urban public life, and classifies the representation ways of them. That is,the commercial spaces are combined with the functions of urban daily life;the non-commercial spaces are combined with the functions of urban public community;the comprehensive whole space is combined with the themed urban life experience. In addition, this chapter also conducts the empirical studies of the corresponding three typical shopping mall cases.By studying the generation principles, spatial characteristics, representation ways and development trend of the complex functional space of shopping malls, this paper hopes to provide some help for the related re search on the relationship between contemporary shopping malls and urban public spaces as well as urban public life, and provide some theoretical references and innovative perspective references for the designers of shopping malls in the future. |
