Research On The Characteristics Of Architectural Creation In Changsha In The First Half Of The 20th Century(1904-1938)

China was in an era rifled with complexity,diversity and inclusiveness when it comes to the first half of the 20 th century.With the impact of outside force and culture to the indigenous politics,economy and culture,cultural intercourse between China and West then made these two cultures merging which made urban architecture and its related fields much more dynamic and manifold.The evolution of modern architectural creation in Changsha was deeply influenced by the upheaval of our society.There are two threshold--the opening of Changsha as a commercial city in 1904 and the conflagration in Changsha in 1938 which is of great importance to architectural creation.The former heralded officially large-scaled swarming of Western Architecture while the latter functioned as a fuse leading the entirely gone of the buildings which once snaked around Changsha.Therefore,author wills set the time-line from 1904-1938 during which a series of important events happened like opening ports,revolution and the conflagration in Changsha.All of these prompted modernization,the forming and evolution of architectural style and the development of construction industry in Changsha.This thesis takes the architectural creation team which is indispensable in embodying the characteristics of architectural creation as the entry point analyzing the features of Changsha architectural creation during 1904-1938.This thesis is divided into three parts:(1)The first part is introduction which elaborates the research’s scale,object and purpose of this paper.It is as the prerequisite for writing this paper in that it analyzes the relevant result and progress of modern architectural creation in Changsha and reflects the spirit of this research.(2)The second part is the major part.The second chapter either analyzes the development of modern city before and after the opening of ports in Changsha or provides a macro social background for elaborating the features of modern architecture creation in Changsha.The third chapter discusses Changsha modern architecture creation team from its establishment,formation and impact on architectural education.This chapter states the creation team’s formation background and analyzes the change of management system of modern construction industry in Changsha simultaneously.The fourth chapter analyzes the practice of creation team in Changsha.(3)The third part is the conclusion which states the features of Changsha’s modern architectural creation from its management system,architectural education,construction technology and evolution of architectural styles.It provides a unique angle for probing the modern architectural history of inland cities of China while analyzing the team’s formation features and internal motives selecting the architectural creation team in Changsha--an inland city as the entry point of this paper.
