Under the background of the national strategy for the construction of China’s Grand Canal Cultural Belt today, the protection and development of canal towns,as an important spatial carrier of canal cultural heritage,is an issue worth exploring. In view of the current inadequacy of horizontal and longitudinal research on the towns along the transport in the region, this paper takes the towns along the transport in Yangzhou as the research object, analyzes and studies the evolution of the macroscopic spatial structure and micro spatial form of the towns along the transport in Yangzhou through the methods of element extraction and induction, consulting ancient books and literature, field visits, etc.,discusses the relationship between the spatial evolution of the towns along the canal in Yangzhou and the canal water system, and constructs the operating framework of the dynamic mechanism of the spatial change of canal towns in the region.Provide technical support for the protection and renewal strategy of urban settlements during the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt. The first chapter, the introduction, pointing out the research background, problems and research significance of this paper, sorting out and summarizing relevant concepts and domestic and foreign research results, and limiting the research objects and scope of the paper, and listing the overall research framework. The second chapter sorts out and summarizes the development history of the towns and canal water network within the scope of the study in a macroscopic view, analyzes the similarities and differences in the development of canal towns in the area and the relationship between the structure of the town network and the development of the canal, and analyzes the research on the basis of this. The canal towns in the object are classified, which lays the foundation for the selection of the third chapter. The third chapter analyzes in detail the process of spatial dynamic evolution of the selected typical case towns of Yangzhou,Gaoyou, and Shaobo in history. This paper takes the towns in Ming and Qing Dynasties as the main research objects because of the highly mature urban spatial forms, the abundant historical data, and the characteristic time. The paper sorts out and summarizes the dynamic evolution process of the spatial elements of the three historical towns in this period. Finally, the spatial evolution characteristics of three towns of different scales are studied horizontally, and the dynamic mechanism framework is constructed. The fourth chapter, based on the previous research on the spatial development of historical cities and towns, proposes a general construction strategy according to the local conditions for the development of the cities along the Yangzhou section of the Grand Canal with the needs of the urban development under the construction of the Grand Canal Culture Belt.It also makes a three-level protection and development concept of "overall city-the development of the relationship between towns and water systems-historic city" for the case towns and gives suggestions for the development direction of the cities along the Yangzhou section of the Grand Canal. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which clarifies the main conclusions, innovations, and the plan of future research.
