Abstract/Summary:
The automated vehicles allow the driver to have a non-driving related task, but when the system encounters an emergency, the driver needs to intervene to complete the takeover. The driver may easily feel fatigue in prolonged automatic driving,so it is important to complete the takeover task safely when having an emergency. The young drivers are mostly novice drivers and lack certain driving experience. They may cause traffic accidents due to panic when the takeover happens. Therefore,it is more important to study methods to relieve passive fatigue and improve take-over performance. This paper proposes a non-driving related task participation mode, including automated without non-driving related task, automated with non-driving related task and automated with interrupted non-driving related task,to study its impact on the passive fatigue and take-over performance of young drivers.Using the driving simulation platform,an automatic driving take-over scenario with a vehicle collision accident is designed, and the experiments are carried out for 25 young drivers. From three perspectives to evaluate the driver states and takeover performance during human-machine switching:(1)In terms of the effectiveness of non-driving related task participation mode,it is proposed to evaluate it with the driver’s takeover reaction time, subjective acceptance and trust;(2)PERCLOS and blink frequency are used to evaluate the driver fatigue;(3)For the takeover performance,it is evaluated by the driver’s eye movement, vehicle control behaviours and the driver’s subjective scoring on NASA-TLX.The experiment shows that the interruption of non-driving related task can make the driver remain highly vigilant. It is effective, trustworthy and acceptable. The results of PERCLOS and blink frequency show that both participating non-driving related task and interrupting nondriving related task can relieve passive fatigue.Compared with the participation in non-driving related task, the driver with interrupted non-driving related task has a longer fixation rate, saccade rate and saccade duration in the road AOI,and the take-over time is shorter. Moreover, the horizontal and vertical control ability is relatively stable, and the takeover performance is better. In general, the interruption design can effectively alleviate passive fatigue and improve takeover performance in prolonged automated driving. In the future, consider applying the interrupted non-driving related task to the design of L3 autonomous vehicle system to provide guarantee for the safe takeover.
