| Since China’s reform and opening up in 1978,consumption has always played an important and positive role in promoting China’s economic growth. At the same time, the living and consumption level of Chinese people has been continuously improved and promoted with the rapid development of China’s market economy. In addition to shortening the distance between cities, the opening of high-speed rail can help realize the spatial transfer of capital, talent, technology and other resources, realize the redistribution of resources, promote urban development, and then affect the level of urban consumption. This paper will focus on the impact of the opening of high-speed railway on the consumption level of urban residents, using spatial econometric analysis.Since there are few literatures focusing on the impact of high-speed railway on consumer consumption in the past, this paper combs the mechanism of the impact of high-speed railway on consumption, adopts spatial Durbin model, takes the relevant data of 265prefecture-level cities from 2009 to 2018 as samples, and selects whether high-speed railway has been put into operation and the years of high-speed railway connection as the core explanatory variables respectively. The research model was confirmed by Moran index,LM test and LR test. After the preliminary regression results were obtained, the robustness test was carried out using residents’ disposable income as the alternative variable, and the 265 cities were divided into three parts according to the economic zone classification standard, and the explained variables were divided into urban and rural areas to conduct the heterogeneity test respectively.Through empirical study, the following conclusions are drawn :(1)China’s urban residents’ consumption has spatial spillover effect.(2)The opening of high-speed railway has a positive spatial spillover effect on urban residents’ consumption, and also has a positive impact on the consumption of residents in surrounding cities.(3)Hexogeneity test. After dividing 265 prefecture-level cities into three regions according to the economic zone classification standard,it is found that the opening of high-speed rail has a significant positive effect on urban consumption in these three regions, and the effect decreases in the order of central, western and eastern regions.(4)After dividing the total retail sales of social consumer goods into urban and rural areas, the heterogeneity test shows that the opening of high-speed rail has a significant positive impact on urban and rural residents’ consumption. The data show that the direct and total effects of high-speed rail on urban residents’ consumption are greater than those in rural areas, but the indirect effects are smaller than those in rural areas. |
