Modern theater design usually requires a large stage space to meet different functional needs of drama, music performance, conference and so on.During theater music performances, the empty stage and upper space will absorb parts of the sound energy, which affects the sound quality of the stage and the auditorium areas.Application of orchestra shells may solve the problem, but the influence from its corresponding parameters on the sound quality of the stage and auditorium areas stays somewhat unclear. For this problem,in this paper we synthesized experiments and numerical analysis to study the influence from orchestra shells parameters on the sound quality in multifunctional theaters. The optimal parameters for orchestra shell design are also discussed. The work is as follow:First of all, based on the actual in-situ measurement, the experiment examined the influence of the orchestra shell on the acoustic parameters of the multifunctional theater auditorium area;analysis and comparison of parameter changes of the theater audience under the two conditions of installation and no installation of the orchestra shell. The results show that the orchestra shell can significantly improve the reverberation time and sound strength of the auditorium, and make the sound energy distribution more uniform, improving the overall acoustic quality of the auditorium area. Then, based on the ray-tracing technology,a reliable numerical simulation model of the multifunctional theater example was established.Based on numerical analysis, the sound quality parameters of the auditorium in the theater before and after the installation of the orchestra shells were compared and studied in detail. The results show that the orchestra shells can significantly improve the fullness of the auditorium, making the multifunctional theater more suitable for natural sound performances mainly based on music performances.Afterwards, based on the numerical simulation model, the geometric parameters of the orchestra shells(side plate tilt angle, top plate tilt angle, distance between the back plate and the stage entrance),and the type of orchestra shells(opening and closing form, unit plate form),etc.were studied.1.The main sound quality parameters of the stage affect the law;and based on this, from the perspective of sound quality improvement, the parameter design method of the orchestra shells is discussed. The results show that the tilt angle of the side cover of the orchestra shells is related to the fullness, loudness and sense of space of the auditorium;the tilt angle of the top cover of the orchestra shells is related to the fullness of the sound quality of the auditorium;the depth of the back of the orchestra shells from the entrance and the fullness of the sound quality,Loudness related. The results also show that: the closed orchestra shells can effectively improve the main sound quality parameters of the stage and the auditorium;the straight orchestra shells can improve the reverberation and stage support of the audience hall;the arc plate orchestra shells maintains the good loudness and space of the audience hall; The board orchestra shells guarantees the early decay time and appropriate loudness of the stage. This article can provide useful reference for the design and application of multifunctional theater orchestra shells.
