Water is the source of life. The safety of drinking water is related to the national economy and people’s livelihood. It is an important duty and task of the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)to monitor the quality of drinking water within their jurisdiction. It has been found that the current national standard test methods of volatile phenols and cyanide in water are traditional manual methods, which have the shortcomings of cumbersome pre-treatment,long testing time and low analysis efficiency, and can not meet the requirements of large quantities of water samples testing and emergency monitoring. Therefore,it is particularly important to develop a rapid and efficient method for the determination of volatile phenol and cyanide in water.Segmented Continuous Flow Analysis(SCFA)can integrate various complex pre-treatments such as distillation, extraction and separation into the analytical unit, automating the operation and making the originally harsh and complex testing method easy to perform, enabling the online analysis of large quantities of water samples. This thesis builds on the practical needs of daily work.Based on the SCFA,a highly sensitive method for the on-line distillation and rapid detection of trace volatile phenols in water was developed by the Alliance-Futura continuous flow analysis system. This thesis includes two parts, and their main contents are summarized as follows:In Part 1,based on the SCFA,a highly sensitive method for the on-line distillation and rapid detection of trace volatile phenols in water was developed by the Alliance-Futura continuous flow analysis system.Firstly, various detection conditions, such as flow rate, concentration of distillation reagent, distillation temperature, concentration and purity of 4-AAP,detection wavelength, surfactant or not, were investigated and optimized. Then, the linear range, detection limit, recovery rate, precision, detection speed and reagent consumption of this method were evaluated and compared with traditional manual operation. Then, the actual samples including the national standard sample were tested. There was no difference between this method and the national standard test method. Finally, the attentions in actual analysis of volatile phenolswere summarized. In Part 2,a SCFA method for the determination of cyanide in water was developed by the Alliance-Futura continuous flow analysis system. The various detection conditions, such as flow rate, concentration of distillation reagent, distillation temperature, detection wavelength and concentration of chloramine-T,were optimizated. The linear range, detection limit, recovery and precision of this method were evaluated.Compared with manual operation,SCFA method has the advantages of faster detection speed, less reagent sample consumption and higher analysis efficiency, which can be more suitable for the analysis of a great quantity of water sample. The actual water samples were tested by the nation standard test method. The results showed no significant difference between two methods. This method was used for the determination of proficiency testing samples “Cyanide in Water No.S285-983” organized by the Environmental Resources Association(ERA).The results were satisfactory. Finally, the attentions for the determination of cyanide in actual water samples were summarized. The last, the researches of this thesis were summarised and prospects.
