Land contamination from human activities constitutes one of the biggest problems facing the world today. It gets worse with each passing year raising health damage to the human beings and ecosystem. In the meantime,it has caused tremendous economic loss and greatly endangered the food security, food quality and social stability. In this study, human health risk assessment criteria is carried out for organic and inorganic contaminants residential land use without consumption of homegrown produce scenario for a former industrial site in Nanjing,China using contaminated land exposure assessment tool(CLEA).The CLEA model uses generic assumptions about the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment and a generic conceptual model for site conditions and human behavior to estimate child and adult exposures to soil contaminants.A combination of generic and site-specific assessment criteria is used in the conceptual model. The derived assessment criteria for all contaminants are compared with carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic screening level by Environmental Protection Agency which concludes that the contamination poses an unacceptable risk to a human receptor The selection of remediation strategy is based on federal remediation technology roundtable with risk management practices that reduces and control the risks associated with a relevant pollutant linkage to an acceptable level.
