As the lifeblood of national economy, the long-distance gas pipelines are becoming more and more important. For the gas at high pressure, flammable and explosive properties, however, the risk assessment of pipeline is not only legal requirements, but also an essential step to ensure safety. In view of the information of the middle section(Zhongwei-Weinan)of the Third West-to-East Gas Pipeline, the risk identification and assessment are carried out by qualitative and quantitative methods in this paper. The risk level of this project is fully recognized, which can be used to provide basis for the safety measures. This paper collects accident data of the oil-gas pipeline in China and abroad, analyzes the accident reasons, obtains the failure rates of the pipelines in Europe and America, and points out the gap between China and foreign countries in the statistics of pipeline accident. The risk factors that may cause pipeline and station failure are identified, and the fishbone diagram of pipeline failure is drawn. An index system of risk assessment is constructed suitable for the gas pipeline of the West-to-East Gas Project, that based on the Kent's risk assessment model. The weight range of each factor in the index system is calculated by ANP method. The index system prebuilt is applied to the risk assessment of the middle section(Zhongwei-Weinan)of the Third West-to-East Gas Pipeline. The evaluation standard of natural disaster index is established, and the ranking of the relative risks of different pipe sections is obtained, which reflects the risk level of the pipeline more efficiently, and the mitigation measures are given according to the corresponding indexes.Lastly, this paper evaluates the hazardous degree of the primary machines in gas station quantitatively,as well as the affected areas of fire&explosion accidents in the station and pipeline are obtained through simulation software.
