Research And Application Of Modeling Elements Of Guizhou’s Gejia Clothing

“The more national features it reflects,the more attractive it is to the world.” Clothing modeling elements are special language symbols that record human life experience,express human aesthetic perception as well as carry human spiritual sustenance and national beliefs.In other words,they are an important carrier for the inheritance of history and civilization.Therefore,clothing modeling elements can be seen as a set of typical and special symbols.From the perspective of semiotics,the research on the application of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements to the sculpture creation on utensils is comprehensively a cross-disciplinary study of semiotics and sculpture creation,with a view to interpreting the cultural connotation and national beliefs of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling with diversified and intertwined research methods.Besides,how to apply these elements to sculpture creation is also discussed.Guided by the three semiotic divisions by Morris and the three trichotomies by Peirce,we analyze the clothing modeling elements of the Gejia people in terms of image signs,indicators,and symbols with utensil modeling theory as a creative method;meanwhile,the elaboration and discussion on these elements are also made in terms of syntax,semantics,pragmatics,etc.,so as to apply them to personal sculpture creation.The discussion process is shown as follows:Firstly,the semiotic theory and the utensil modeling theory are expounded: Morris’ semantic division theory is employed to analyze the context under which the Gejia people’s clothing modeling element symbols came into being,and to explore their sources.The clothing modeling element symbols of the Gejia people can be categorized into four groups in the subject,namely history,nature,daily life,and religious belief,and into three general groups,that is an individual symbol,composite symbol,and continuous symbol.In addition,the symbolic interpretation of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements is conducted.Secondly,the pragmatic study on the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements is achieved.Based on the symbol classification,symbol color and symbol structure as well as the aesthetic analysis of the visual symbols of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements,the study carries out the syntactical analysis of visual symbols;based on the totem,cultural connotations,religious beliefs,and national emotions of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements,the study presents a semantic elaboration on visual symbols;and based on the subjects using and spreading channels of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements,the study dissects the pragmatic effects of the Gejia people’s living environment on the application of visual symbols.Finally,a set of application methods are summarized featuring both the retention of traditional semantics of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling element symbols and the conformity to sculpture creation through the analysis of the semiotic application of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements while combining with the sculpture creation principles and methods.And then,the re-creation design of the Gejia people’s clothing modeling element symbols is completed by means of utensil modeling,and the creation process from fabric element symbols to sculpture element symbols is accomplished for the Gejia people’s clothing modeling elements.
