Tactile Perception Of Fibrous Materials In Jewelry

Vision,hearing,touch,taste and smell comprise the five-sensory system of human beings,and they are interlinked and transducible.With the revolution in people's mindset as well as in materials,jewelry design tends to focus more and more on people's ever increasing sensory demands.With more versatile options of available materials,it is now expected to deliver deeper physical and psychological feelings for both wearers and viewers.Fiber materials,as the earliest and most friendly materials for humankind,show plentiful touch sensations,making them more and more popular for and jewelry designers and artists.Touch is the most straightforward and swift sensation for us to know the world,and can help bring jewelry closer to us,providing fiber materials' feedback to our brains.This paper focuses on the touch sensation of fiber materials in jewelries and explores their new possibilities in jewelry design to transfer the physical sensations to emotions when people encounter fiber jewelries.We summarize the influential factors of fiber materials in touch sensations based on perceptual evaluations,and obtain their touch characteristics.The analysis results on the adoption of fiber materials in traditional and modern jewelries leads to our research on the interactivity between fiber jewelries and humans from the perspective of touch sensation of fiber materials.This further highlights the importance of touch sensation in jewelry design.It is therefore required for jewelry designers to pay more attention besides visual effects in the design and practice.The methodology of this paper is a combination of literature review,case study,information extraction and the author's own experimental study.
