Historical campaigns contain a large amount of information on time,place,characters,attributes(army types,forces,weapons,etc.)and development processes.It is difficult to make readers intuitively understand the process of the expansion of the battle on the time axis and space dimensions based on text descriptions.Geographic information system(GIS)technology combines spatial data and attribute data,using maps as carriers to visually manage,analyze,and express data.Therefore,using GIS technology to tell,analyze,and explain historical battles can make the audience more intuitive and deeper.It is easier to understand the development process of time and space in historical battles.The Huaihai Battle is one of the three most famous battles of the Chinese Liberation War.The entire battle lasted more than two months and spanned the four provinces of Jiangsu,Shandong,Henan,and Anhui.It had the characteristics of long time,large scale,large space span,and complex battlefield situation.Therefore,since the founding of the People’s Republic of China,there have been many works and achievements in literature,film and television,military theoretical research and other aspects with the background of the Huaihai Campaign.This article takes the Huaihai Campaign as a research object.First,using map visualization methods,the space-time background proposed by the Huaihai Campaign is visualized and analyzed.Then,the geographical environment of the Huaihai Campaign is analyzed from the four aspects of landform,hydrology,transportation and settlement,and the influence of various elements on military activities is summarized.Meanwhile,the campaign process of key nodes is visualized and the influencing factors of geographical environment are analyzed.Finally,this paper summarizes the historical data of the battle and develops a WebGIS network platform integrating maps,texts,photos and videos to display the Huaihai Campaign systematically,so as to realize the visual display of the Huaihai Campaign and facilitate users to have a more intuitive,in-depth and rapid understanding of the Huaihai Campaign.The main research work is as follows:(1)On the basis of analyzing and sorting out a large amount of historical data,literature,film and television works,and military theoretical research results related to the Huaihai Campaign,a thematic map on the background of the Huaihai Campaign is designed and compiled,and the background of the Huaihai Campaign’s emergence and development is visualized.GIS spatial interpolation method is used to draw the heat map of the KMT and the Communist Party on the Huaihai battlefield before the start of the battle,and on this basis,the background,planning and situation of the campaign are analyzed in depth.(2)Geographical environment is one of many factors that affect the outcome of a battle.In the Huaihai region,where the water system is developed,the villages are dense,and there are some hills and mountains at the same time,how the warring parties make reasonable use of the geographical environment is crucial.Based on the collection of historical data,this paper designs and maps the geographic environment maps of several key nodes in the Huaihai Campaign,and analyzes the evolution of the battlefield of several key nodes and the geographical environment affected by them.(3)A map expression and analysis system of Huaihai battle is developed by using WebGIS technology.It realizes the visual expression and analysis of the background,development stage and key nodes of the Huaihai Campaign based on the map,and organically combines the data such as maps,texts,photos and videos,so as to increase the multi-sense of users and enhance their browsing interest,which is conducive to the intuitive and in-depth understanding of the Huaihai Campaign.
