In recent years, with the continuous expansion of urban scale and buildings, the urban heat island effect has intensified. With the continuous increase of high-rise buildings in the core areas of the city, the influence of the height attributes of buildings on the urban thermal environment cannot be ignored. This study analyzes the 3D properties of the core buildings in 31 capital cities in China to identify the spatial configuration, building quantity, height, area, volume and surface area of each city building to find which properties impact the most on the thermal environment.Fitting the buildings 3D properties from different scales on a spatial extent to find the most relevant radius in each city.Taking the optimal radius of each research area as the standard,we couple the building density and height with the surface thermal environment in the optimal radius for coupling analysis and cluster analysis, and examine the spatial distribution law to quantify its influence on the surface temperature. Results show that the building area has the highest relevance to the urban thermal environment, and the building height has the lowest relevance. The optimal radius of each research city is in the range of 90 m to 540 m,and with the increase of the city scale, the optimal radius data increases. The building area has a warming effect on the urban thermal environment. For every 10%increase in building area, the average temperature in the area will increase by 1% to 2%.The building height has different effects in different cities, and the cooling effect is mostly, and there are heating effects for a few cities.Every 10 meters increase in the average height of buildings can affects the average temperature in the area by 0.5% to 2%.This research have obtained the quantitative influence of the 2D and 3D properties of major urban buildings on the urban thermal environment, revealing the regional differences between cities, which is important to rationally planning the city spatial distribution and alleviating the urban heat island effect.
