Interactive Visualization And Analysis Of Hypervariable Economic Data

The socio-economic development of a region plays a key role in its overall development.The socio-economic analysis of a specific region is closely related to the local policy making,as well as it is also a useful tool for testing the effectiveness of policies.Because the importance of the socio-economic study,selecting the opportune method to promote the socio-economic reasoning is crucial.Visual analytics is a combination of the automatic analysis models and interactive visualization,as well as it is designed to understand the complex data sets.The socioeconomic data involves multiple indicators in multiple areas.Therefore,using the visual analytics method in socio-economic study improves the understanding better of the data and further the analysis.Visualization is a core component of visual analytics.Suitable visualization can significantly facilitate the exploration of the information behind data.Thence,designing the appropriate visualization methods is important for socio-economic data analysis studies.However,few studies focused on hypervariable visualization.Map-like visualization can transform the non-spatial data to metaphorical maps that allows users to extract the information based on their previous knowledge on map reading.Therefore,three visualization methods,matrix,chord,and metaphorical map are compared in the visual analytics of hypervariable economic data.The main innovations of this thesis are applying the visual analytics methods in economic data analysis,and depicting the multi-dimensional socio-economic data in an interactive metaphorical map.This thesis selected Jiangsu,China as the study area,and used visual analytics method to analyze the socio-economic data of it.The Pearson correlation coefficient analysis and principal component analysis are used to study the correlation of the data.In addition,matrix visualization,chord diagram and metaphorical map visualizations are used to express the hypervariable socio-economic data.To evaluate the three visualization methods used in this study,a user study was conducted with 42 users.According to the evaluation results,this thesis designs a dashboard incorporating with aforementioned visualizations for further analysis.The contributions of this study are as follows: 1)it proposes a framework for analyzing the hypervariable socio-economic;2)it designs innovative interactive visualization methods for socio-economic data with hyper variables;3)it extends the visual analytics method by adding evaluation process.
