Abstract/Summary:
This thesis research explores the perceptions of the three African American (AA) student research writers at the Inclusive Center for Unity and Empowerment (ICUE) public magnet school. In understanding the challenges students face in research writing, this thesis research examines how the three participants perceived their skills within the conventions of research writing. The interviews conducted also presented the perceptions of the three participants in regards to their approaches to research writing, their strengths and weaknesses, and their readiness for post-secondary English. The participants also provided suggestions for the teacher in order to improve research-writing practices for upcoming senior research writers. This thesis research showed that lack of skills in time management, formatting structures, organization, and sentence structure contributed to their perceptions of themselves as writers. Chapter five provided possible implications on how teachers can negotiate effective instruction based on the students' individualized needs instead of solely dictating to students the requirements of research writing within their classroom context.
