My personal experience and background in the area of public relations were of considerable influence in formulating this thesis topic. After graduation from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, with a bachelor's degree in English and studio art, I took a temporary job with a custom photography and public relations firm in Corpus Christi, Texas. With the experience I gained in this job I was able to obtain a position as an administrative assistant in the Information Services Division of the Corpus Christi City government. Here I had a chance to learn and practice various public relations-related skills. Writing, photography, graphic design and layout were assigned to me. I soon realized my skills needed broadening and improving.;Upon enrolling in the graduate school of the Department of Journalism of the University of Wyoming, I found the department primarily oriented toward newspaper journalism. In the past, most media jobs in Wyoming were in newspaper or broadcast areas, so many journalism graduates found positions with media outlets in the state. In the last decade, however, the field of public relations has experienced a rapid international growth.1 At the present, public relations opportunities in Wyoming are booming and will probably continue to expand as more industry and supportive commerce move into the state.;1Philip Lesley, ed., Public Relations Handbook, 2nd ed.
