Empirical studies have shown that stigma has a significant impact on help-seeking behaviors among Asians and Asian Americans. Given the role of mental health treatment in reducing emotional distress, it is important to explore mental health interventions to reduce stigma and increase utilization of mental health services. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an educational media intervention, "Overcoming Adversity: Stories of Hope and Courage," created by Asian Americans for Community Involvement, at decreasing public stigma and whether the intervention delivered in a group context is more effective than individual context at reducing the stigma of mental health among a community sample of 79 Asians and Asian Americans. Analyses showed that public stigma was decreased after viewing the video, suggesting that the video intervention is effective in reducing public stigma. However, the results did not support the hypothesis that intervention in a group setting was more effective at reducing public stigma and self-stigma than in an individual setting. Therefore, the format in which the intervention was presented does not affect the effectiveness of the video intervention at reducing public stigma among Asians and Asian Americans.
