Abstract/Summary:
A comprehensive assessment of racism and exploitation in intercollegiate athletics is proposed. This study was proposed to describe the historical emergence, and development of intercollegiate athletics as a large-scale revenue-making entertainment industry. This research uses aspects of Marx's theory of historical materialism and Edward's theories of discrimination in sports. Data was collected, organized, and processed with the following techniques: (1) descriptive analysis; (2) historical materialism; (3) case study techniques. My findings indicate that African-American student-athletes and coaches experience racism and exploitation based upon race and class. The NCAA and major universities systematically exploit their African-American athletes many of whom do not earn a college degree.
