Abstract/Summary:
Children with diabetes may be at increased risk for the development of comorbid psychiatric disorders. This study aims to determine whether recent literature supports this claim, and to advocate the implementation of selective preventive interventions.;A review of recently published literature was conducted using PubMed search, as well as references from relevant articles.;Nineteen studies were included; 15 investigating depression, 5 investigating anxiety, and 6 investigating disordered eating behavior (DEB). Ten studies reported increased rates of depression in diabetic youth compared to the general population. Rates of anxiety and DEB were varied. Twelve studies on depression and 4 on anxiety found relationships between psychiatric comorbidity and poor metabolic control.;It was concluded that youth with diabetes have higher rates of psychiatric disorders possibly leading to deleterious effects on glycemic control. Selective preventive interventions targeted at this population, such as early diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric comorbidities, may improve glycemic control.
