Abstract/Summary:
The United States is experiencing a demographic shift in the number of adults who marry to the number of adults who remain single. The resultant impacts on residential mobility are less understood. This research utilizes traditional models of residential mobility research to examine single, never-married women with college degrees. As a group, these women open the door to disaggregating the heteronormativity within academic research in terms of women, women's experiences, and women's mobility. This thesis investigates the relationship between residential mobility, life course transitions, and single, never-married women with college degrees living in the Colorado Springs area. The results indicate that the individual experiences of single, never-married, highly educated women do not necessarily follow the customary understanding of life course changes, such as milestone experiences, that scholars have argued contribute to residential mobility patterns. This research argues that a more intersectional approach to the life course transition model is needed to understand the experiences of diverse groups.
