Abstract/Summary:
This study addressed the symptomology of adult female incest survivors from within a stress response syndrome framework. It explored the effects of a stress management intervention on symptoms of depression and anxiety in incest survivors. The 10-week intervention consisted of a three phase program, biofeedback-assisted deep muscle relaxation training; individualized coping skills assessment and training; and the application of these coping skills in real-life situations.;The Program was administered to three participants from an Incest Survivor's Group. Participants were given pre and post-program tests.;Findings indicate that each participant benefited by a reduction in her depression and anxiety levels and by decreased muscle activity levels.;Conclusions reached are: a stress management approach is useful to the special needs and problems of incest survivors, the approach can help alleviate somatic distress, strengthen the survivor's sense of self-efficacy; and be uniquely utilized for healing based on individual resources and processes.
